Reiki is a combined Japanese word meaning Universal Life Force or the creative intelligence which animates and sustains all living things. It is basically the energetic manifestation of unconditional love. A very ancient spiritual healing method, it was "rediscovered" in the early 1900's and formulated as the practice we use today by a Japanese monk-educator named Mikao Usui. It is also known as the Usui System of Natural Healing. It is ritual of hand positions in prescribed locations on the head, front and back of the body. Reiki is delivered through the hands of the initiated practitioner to the recipient who remains fully clothed, usually lying on a massage table or other comfortable surface. It is light touch, experienced as a warm, calming sensation of nurturing and wellbeing. A session can produce significant symptomatic improvement through release of physical, emotional and psychological stress. The results are unique to each individual because the higher intelligence which guides Reiki "knows" each person's needs and goals.
